THIS WEEK
The University of Utah men’s golf team has started the spring by posting their lowest score of the year at the John Burns Intercollegiate and earning their highest finish at the Desert Intercollegiate. The next opportunity for the Utes to continue building on their positive spring momentum comes at the Bandon Dunes Championship, which will be held at the Bandon Dunes Course from March 12-14 in Bandon, Ore.
This is the sixth straight year Utah has teed off at Bandon Dunes and in each of those years, the Utes have placed in the top five. That streak is highlighted by a tournament championship in 2019, when Blake Tomlinson won the event’s individual title and two more Utes finished in the top 10 to help Utah claim a score of 12-over and first place.
In 2021, the Utes placed second, followed by a fourth-place showing in 2022. Tomlinson and Barcos were Utah’s top finishers a year ago, both tying for 11th. Barcos was 1-under in the both the first and third rounds before finishing with a 4-over 217, while Tomlinson’s consistent play led to him finishing with an identical number. Oregon took home the tournament’s 2022 championship.
THE FIELD
The Ducks will be back at Bandon Dunes to defend that crown, but they’ll have to fend off challenges from 15 other teams, including Utah and Pac-12 rivals Oregon State and Washington State. The field also includes Air Force, Boise State, Drexel, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Sacramento State, San Jose State, Santa Clara, Seattle, SIU Edwardsville, Seton Hall and South Dakota.
UTAH’S LINE-UP
Utah’s lineup will remain unchanged from their last tournament as Braxton Watts, Javier Barcos, Martín León, Go Nakatsukasa and Brandon Robison will be making up the team’s lineup once again and Tanner Telford will be playing as an individual.
