NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt has two selections on the First Spring Haskins Award Watch List, it was announced Friday by The Haskins Foundation.
Commodores Gordon Sargent and Matthew Riedel are joined by Ludvig Aberg (Texas Tech), Cole Anderson (Florida State), David Ford (North Carolina), Nick Gabrelcik (North Florida), Ian Gilligan (Long Beach State) Austin Greaser (North Carolina), Benjamin James (Virginia), Tommy Kuhl (Illinois), Christian Lamprecht (Georgia Tech), Yuxin Lin (Florida), Christiaan Maas (Texas), Calum Scott (Texas Tech) and Michael Thorbjornsen (Stanford) on the list.
Sargent, a 2023 Masters Tournament invitee, has recorded a top-seven finish in seven consecutive tournaments. The defending national champion has won the East Lake Cup and The Hayt Intercollegiate this season and finished second at the Watersound Invitational.
Sargent has a team-high 16 rounds under par in seven events this season and a team-leading stroke average of 67.7.
A senior, Riedel finished first during the stroke play portion of SEC Match Play in October and has recorded three other top-10 finishes this season. He also came in 11th at the Frederica Cup and tied for 15th at the East Lake Cup.
In seven events this season, Riedel has a stroke average of 69.2 and has recorded 13 under-par rounds.
Celebrating its 53rd year, the Fred Haskins Award has been given to players who have captured 33 major championships and more than 400 professional tournaments around the world. The Fred Haskins Award is the oldest individual college golf award and the only award to be voted on by players, coaches, sports information directors and select golf media.
Williams Named Freshman of the Week
Vanderbilt’s Wells Williams was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Wednesday.
Williams won his first collegiate individual title Tuesday with a three-round total of 203 at the Cabo Collegiate. He shot a bogey-free 65 in the second round and a 4-under-par 67 in the final round which included just one bogey.
Williams won the event by five strokes and the SEC honor is the first of his young career.
In three career starts for the Commodores, Williams has finished inside the top 14 in all three.
