Cal Trio Compete As Individuals In Two-Day Tournament

ALAMEDA – Ethan Chung highlighted a trio of California men’s golfers who competed as individuals in the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Corica Park on Monday and Tuesday. The third round of the tournament was canceled due to inclement weather in the Bay Area on Tuesday after the field was able to play 36 holes on Monday.

Chung, who has played 15 rounds in five stroke-play events this season, shot back-to-back 3-under par 69s on Monday to tie for fourth place at 6-under par (138). The redshirt sophomore totaled nine birdies throughout the first 36 holes, including three in a row on holes 13-15 in round two. Chung was one of five golfers in the field named to the all-tournament team.

Close behind Chung was sophomore Papon Sawatyanon (75-67 – 142, -2), who was one of six golfers in the field to shoot a tournament-low 5-under-par 67 in the second round on the way to a tie for 11th place. The second-round 67 – keyed by an eagle on hole 1 and three straight birdies on holes 5-7 – was an impressive bounce-back response to his first-round 75.

Freshman Daniel Heo tied for 79th at 11-over par (78-77 – 155).

The Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout was hosted by CSU East Bay and featured 15 NCAA Division II teams.
