Seventh Ranked Women’s Golf Completes Opening Round from Phoenix

PHOENIX – The 7th-ranked Mississippi State women’s golf squad opened up the first round of the 50th edition of the PING/ASU Invitational on Friday. After 18 holes, State is in a three-way tie for second shooting 290 (2-OverPar) as a team.

The Bulldogs held strong throughout the opening round of play from Papago Golf Club behind the play of standout sophomore Julia Lopez Ramirez. The Bulldogs jumped between fifth and third place late in the opening round before shaving a few strokes from their scorecard just before the afternoon set over the Valley of the Sun to finish tied for second.

Lopez Ramirez continues to shine within her encore performance after winning SEC Freshman of the Year last year, carding yet another round in the 60s to open up the last regular season event. Lopez Ramirez sunk seven birdies in the first round (the most within the field) to secure her 22nd career round in the 60s (5-Under, 67). 5-Under Par (67) is tied for the sixth lowest opening round individually in Mississippi State history. Lopez Ramirez is now only three rounds in the 60s behind all-time Bulldog great Ally McDonald Ewing for the most in program history.

Senior Hannah Levi continued her strong stretch in the Spring, finishing the first round tied for 22nd and sinking two birdies on the day to finish with 1-Over Par (73). Freshman Izzy Pellot also rolled in two birdies on the day, finishing 2-Over Par (74) and is tied for 32nd.

Freshman Surapa Janthamunee and senior Abbey Daniel round out the scorecard for the Bulldogs in Round One. SJ carded 4-over par (76) to finish tied for 50th while Daniel finished tied for 87th with 9-over Par (81).

The Bulldogs will see tee times in Rounds Two and Three based on placement in the prior round. The Bulldog’s second-round tee times are TBD at this time. All updates regarding tee times for the PING/ASU Invitational can be found on Twitter and Instagram by searching “HailStateWG”.
