Spartans Tie for Eighth Place at ASU Invitational


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf team shot a 9-over 297 in the final round and tied for eighth place among 17 teams at the ASU Invitational, held at Papago Golf Club in Tempe, Ariz.

The teams played on the par-72, 6-543 yard course that is the home to Arizona State golf. The 17-team field included 12 ranked among the top-50 in the country by Golfstat.

The Spartans had moved into seventh place after Saturday’s second round with a 4-under par 284 and tied for eighth place with Oregon State at a three-day, 54-hole total of 18-over par 882.

Northwestern led from start to finish and topped the field at 18-under par 846, with host Arizona State second at 4-under par 860, Baylor third at 3-over par 867, Mississippi State fourth at 4-over par 868 and Texas rounded out the top-five teams at 6-over par 870.

Oregon (11-over par 875) was in sixth place with Kansas placing seventh (13-over par 877), just five shots ahead of the Spartans.

Sophomore Brooke Biermann and junior Valentina Rossi  were the top finishers for the Spartans, tying for 15th place with scores of 2-over par 218, respectively.

Biermann closed out with an even-par 72 to finish at 2-over par 218 (73-73-72). Rossi, who fired a career best 6-under par 66 on Saturday, finished with a 2-over par 74 (78-66-74).

Sophomore Shannon Kennedy, who carded a 1-under par 71 in the second round, tied for 30th place at 5-over par 221 (75-71-75).

Junior Leila Raines tied for 61st place at 11-over par 227 (76-75-76) and sophomore Katie Lu finished in a tie for 63rd place at 12-over par 228 (77-74-77).

The Spartans are back in action next at the Buckeye Invitational on Saturday, April 15 and Sunday, April 16.
