Boilermakers Remain in the Hunt at Bulls Bay

AWENDAW, S.C. – The Purdue men’s golf team continued to play well in round two of the Hootie at Bulls Bay, giving itself a chance at a team title in Tuesday’s final round.

The Boilermakers totaled an 8-under par 280, to sit in second place after 36 holes at 22-under par 554 (274-280). Purdue trails East Tennessee State by six shots and leads New Mexico (-21) by one shot. North Carolina State (-20) and Missouri (-19) round out the top five.

Purdue started its round red-hot, shooting 8-under par on its front nine, then surging to 16-under par through 14 holes before running into trouble down the stretch. Purdue played its last four holes 8-over par combined as a team to fall off the pace set by East Tennessee State.

However, despite faltering late, Purdue is in position to earn its first tournament title since winning the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate in October 2021.

The story of round two was the play of junior All-America candidate Herman Sekne, who jumped 15 places from 17th to T-2nd with a bogey-free, 7-under par 65, good for a 36-hole total of 10-under par 134 (69-65). He trails Kentucky’s Alex Goff by three shots entering tomorrow’s final round.

Sekne’s round tied for the seventh-best, 18-hole score in school history. He now has eight rounds in the 60s this season, good for the fifth most in a year in school history already. His 18 career rounds in the 60s are just six shy of the school record set by Austin Eoff (2014-17).

Kent Hsiao and Nick Dentino are both tied for 16th after posting identical 36-hole scores of 67-72=139 (-5). Both Hsiao and Dentino got to 2-under par during their rounds, but suffered a pair of bogeys late in the round to fall out of the top 10.

Peyton Snoeberger shot a 1-under par 71 to sit in 33rd place at 2-under par 142 (71-71), while Andrew Farraye is tied for 44th at even-par 144 (72-72).

Playing as an individual, Nels Surtani is tied for 51st at 1-over par 145 (75-70).

Purdue will play in the final pairing Tuesday, starting at 9:21 a.m. ET, off hole No. 1. The Boilermakers will be paired with East Tennessee State and New Mexico.
