PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men’s golf team inched up a spot to a third place finish here Friday, as the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate came to a close.

Host Wyoming held off the field in claiming its own tourney, as the Cowboys turned in an even-par 288 score in the final round to win with a 7-under 857 score.  Fresno State moved from third to second with the best single round team Friday (4-under 284) to close at 4-under 860.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 47 – the highest that competed here – were the only other team under par, finishing with a 1-under 863 on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club Course layout; CU had the second-best final round score of 3-under 285.  Utah (868) and Hawaii (872) rounded out the top five.

Sophomore Dylan McDermott led the Buffaloes for the fourth time in seven tournaments, as he claimed runner-up honors with a 5-under 211 score; he finished up with a second straight 3-under 69 after tying for a team-high five birdies Friday.  He had 11 pars and two bogeys otherwise as he spent much of the round chasing medalist honors, closing to within one of the lead on several occasions.  He was second in both par-3’s scoring (3-under) and in par-5 scoring (7-under).  He had an eagle, 12 birdies and 32 pars against nine bogeys overall in the event.

Fresno State’s Matthew Manganello claimed medalist honors with an 8-under 208 performance, pulling away from McDermott, who had closed to within a stroke, over the final seven holes.

“I played well,” McDermott said. “I definitely pushed Matthew throughout the round.  My game was all around good, I just had a couple shots where I didn’t commit.  I felt I had it in me to pull it off, just wasn’t able to close it.  I learned a lot and glad to start the spring off well.”

Sophomore Justin Biwer finished in a tie for fourth after shooting a 3-under 69 Friday for a 54-hole score of 3-under 213.  He started the day with a bogey on No. 1 thanks to a bad drive, but came right back with three birdies on his next four holes and went on to match McDermott’s team-high five birdies in all, including closing his round out on No. 18.  His 15 pars for the event were the second-most in the field and he played the par-4 holes the fourth-best (1-over).

It marked the first time the Buffaloes had two finishers in the top five of a major tournament since the 2018 Mark Simpson-CU Invitational, when Trevor Olkowski tied for medalist honors and Daniel O’Loughlin…
