Wang Tied for Fourth after Opening Round at Augusta National Women’s Amateur

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Crystal Wang ended the first round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur tied for fourth place after firing a 2-under 70 at Champions Retreat.

Wang shot a two-over 38 on the front nine before ripping off four birdies on the back en route to a 32.

“So in the beginning I kind of struggled with my short game,” Wang said. “Then toward the end when I got used to like the speed, so my putting — I was hitting it closer, and my putting’s a little better.”

The Diamond Bar, Calif., native said she used her previous experience on the course in last year’s tournament to her aid today.

“Well, the first year I was in some trouble, so I kind of know where not to go. Then just playing this course again and seeing it from like a different perspective really helps.”

Wang ended the first round as the highest ranked Big Ten golfer and trails leader Rose Zhang by four strokes.

Wang will tee-off in tomorrow’s second round at 7:00 a.m., which will again be played at Champions Retreat. The Top 30 players, including ties, at the conclusion of play tomorrow will make the cut for Saturday’s final round, which is played at Augusta National.
