AUGUSTA, Ga. — University of Michigan women’s golfer Monet Chun used five birdies to pace a second-round 69 (-3) on Thursday (March 30) and a 142 (-2) 36-hole qualifying total helping her advance to the championship round of the prestigious Augusta National Women’s Amateur at the Champions Retreat.
Tying for sixth, Chun finished among the top 30 of the 72-golfer field and moves on to a final round on Saturday (April 1) played on the famed Augusta National Golf Club. On Friday, the entire field will play a practice round of the world renowned home of the Masters.
After playing in the morning wave for Wednesday’s (March 29) opening round (73, +1), Chun headed out in the final group at the Champions Retreat Thursday morning. Starting off the 10th tee, she opened with three straight pars before a bogey on the 13th put her one-over. However, she responded with three birdies over her final five back-nine holes helping her make the turn two-under.
On the front-side, she clipped off four more additional pars, before two birdies (Nos. 5 and 7) sandwiched a second bogey (No. 6) as she headed to the final hole at three-under. With a closing par on the par-5 ninth hole, she etched her 69 (-3) on the board. Her second round was tied for the third lowest round of the second day and among the 27 total sub-par rounds.
“Like yesterday, I just wanted to stick to my game plan. I just took it hole-by-hole and shot-by-shot — and it paid off. I made some key approaches and putts, which allowed me to make some birdies,” said Chun. “Advancing is very special. Having my sister (Adele) with me makes it even better. The next two days are going to be amazing. I feel very fortunate.”
Chun becomes the second Wolverine to advance to the ANWA’s final round after teammate Hailey Borja made the cut in 2022 and tied for 12th with a 221 total (71-76-74).
Chun also is one of three Big Ten golfers in the field to advance as Illinois’ Crystal Wang (t-14th; 70-74/144) and Ohio State’s Caley McGinty (t-21st; 75-70/145) were among the top 30. Stanford’s Rose Zhang is atop the leaderboard with a 13-under 131 (66-65) total.
