AUGUSTA, Ga. – Thunderstorms caused a lengthy delay in the middle of Saturday’s opening round at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club. However, the delay did not seem to bother Adrien Dumont de Chassart. Shortly after play resumed, the fifth-year senior began his second round with a run of six birdies over nine holes to take the individual lead, where he held steady until play was halted due to darkness with 6-8 holes remaining in Round 2 on Saturday evening.
As a team, the Illini sit at 16-under in a tie for second with No. 22-ranked Virginia. No. 12 Florida leads at 21-under. No. 38 East Tennessee State (-10), No. 9 Texas (-4), No. 18 Oklahoma State (-2) and UCF (-2) also finished under par as a team when play was stopped.
Dumont de Chassart, at 9-under with six holes remaining in his second round, holds a slim two-stroke lead over the rest of the field. After starting on No. 4, he opened with a three-under 69 in Round 1, and notched birdies on Nos. 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, and 12, to open Round 2 and jump four spots into the sole possession of the lead.
In addition to Dumont de Chassart’s play, the Illini also received top-10 scores from Jackson Buchanan and Haskins Award watch list honoree Tommy Kuhl. Buchanan is 4-under overall and sits in seventh place with eight holes remaining in his second round. Kuhl, is just one stroke behind Buchanan with seven holes to play entering tomorrow’s finale.
Fifth-year senior Matthis Besard rounded out the scoring for the Illini in Round 1 with a 1-under 71 to open. He is even-par overall with six holes to play in a tie for 26th, while freshman Ryan Voois, making his debut in the Illini lineup, opened with a 78 and sits at 10-over in a tie for 70th with six holes remaining in his second round.
Round 2 will conclude starting at 8:15 a.m. ET/7:15 a.m. CT Sunday morning, followed by Round 3.
