Cal Ties For Fifth Behind Sampson Zheng’s Third-Round 64
SAN FRANCISCO – California junior Sampson Zheng shot a tournament-low 64 and the Golden Bears climbed four spots on the leaderboard on Saturday to tie for fifth at The Goodwin. The Bears (842, +2) shot the second-best third-round score in the field to clinch their third top-five finish in four tournaments played this spring.
Zheng’s standout third-round effort rocketed him 42 spots up the individual leaderboard into a tie for fifth. The 18-hole score was a collegiate low for the junior, who continues to excel for the Bears this season. Zheng (69-73-64 – 206, -4) was masterful on Saturday as he tallied eight birdies, including five on the front nine holes. He has shot under par five times in seven tournaments during the 2022-23 season.
No. 13 Oklahoma (822, -18) and Ben Lorenz (-9) captured the team title and individual medalist honors. No. 11 Georgia Tech (-12) and eighth-ranked Stanford (-1) rounded out the top three in a field that featured seven top-38 squads and nine Pac-12 teams.
Zheng was one of three Bears who shot even par or better on Saturday, as he was joined by Daniel Heo (212, +2) and Simon Kwon (215, +5). Heo finished tied for 32nd while Aaron Du (213, +3) earned a top-40 finish.
