Vanderbilt Men's Golf | Commodores Climb Into Third

NAPLES, Fla. — Vanderbilt played solid golf for much of the day Monday and put itself in prime position to make a run at the tournament title going into the final round of the Calusa Cup.

The Commodores had the best round of the day, a 3-over-par 291, and moved into third place after 36 holes. They trail first-place North Carolina by nine shots at the Calusa Pines Golf Club.

“We wanted to come out and play a little closer to our identity than what we’ve played our last few rounds. I’m really excited that we did that,” Vandy head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “Having all five guys staying in the battle was big. William and Cole both played really nice rounds and lifted the team up with their play. We knew it was an important day and I thought the guys responded well.”

Vandy was led Monday by Cole Sherwood and William Moll who each carded 1-under-par 71s. Moll moved into fourth overall at even-par while Sherwood is tied for fifth (+1).

Reid Davenport bounced back with a 74 and is tied for 29th overall. Matthew Riedel (+4) is tied for 15th after a 75 on Monday and Wells Williams (+6) is tied for 21st.

“This is a really demanding course that is helping us grow and preparing us for what’s ahead,” Limbaugh said. “When things are hard it makes you better and as a competitor you have to learn to stay in the fight. Tuesday is another great opportunity for us to grow and take a step toward being the team we want to be.”

Vanderbilt will try to complete its comeback staring at 8 a.m. CT Tuesday when it tees off alongside Wake Forest and North Carolina.
