Izuzquiza's 2 Eagles Leads To Career-Best 66 At ACC Championship

University of North Carolina junior Crista Izuzquiza made two eagles five holes apart and shot a 6-under 66 in Friday’s third round of the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.

The Tar Heels shot 5-over 293 on Friday, the sixth-best round of the day, and finished the tournament tied with Notre Dame for ninth at 30 over.

Second-ranked and top-seed Wake Forest was first after 54 holes of stroke play at 19-under 845. Duke (-11), Clemson (-7) and Virginia (+1) also advanced to Saturday’s match play semifinals. The Cavaliers qualified 13 shots ahead of Florida State for the fourth and final spot.

Virginia’s Amanda Sambach was the individual ACC champion after shooting 68-66-68 for 14-under 202. She edged Duke’s Phoebe Brinker, who shot 64 today, by two strokes for the title.

Izuzquiza (pronounced EE-thew-KEY-thuh) came into today’s round with one career eagle in 58 collegiate rounds. Carolina began on the 10th hole, where she made a 3 on the 438-yard, par 5. Four holes later she holed out from the fairway for a 2 on the 402-yard, par-4 14th hole.

The Madrid, Spain, native shot a career-best 6-under 66 today, which tied the lowest round by a Tar Heel in an ACC Championship. Allie White (2011) and Meaghan Francella (2004) also carded 66s in previous ACC Championship competition.

In addition to the pair of eagles, Izuzquiza made three birdies (to shoot 32 on the back nine, her first nine holes of the day) and only one bogey. The 66 is the lowest round by a Tar Heel this season. She tied for 24th (79-76-66) at 5-over 221.

Izuzquiza was the only player in the 12-team field with multiples eagles in today’s round. Sambach, the medalist, was the only other player to eagle the 10th hole today and no one other than Izuzquiza eagled the 14th.

UNC freshman Megan Streicher and senior Kayla Smith both finished in the top 20. Streicher (73-71-74) tied for 12th at 2-over 218, while Smith (74-73-73) tied for 19th at 4-over 220.
