Yanagi shoots under par in the first round of the El Macero Classic


DAVIS, Calif. – Senior Pono Yanagi paced the Washington State men’s golf team during the first round of play at the 2023 El Macero Classic Friday, April 14, as the Hilo, Hawaii native carded 1-under par 71 to finish the day in a tie for 15th on the player leaderboard.

Yanagi collected a team-best four birdies in the first round to help him finish the day at 1-under 71. It is the eighth time during the 2022-23 season that the senior has posted an under-par round. Yanagi goes into Saturday’s second round in a tie for 15th place.

The Cougars ended the first round of the El Macero Classic in 15th on the team leaderboard. Washington State carded 6-over 294 as a team in the tournament’s first round. WSU tied for the fifth-most birdies in the first round with 15.

Junior Drayton Joseph also ended the first day of the El Macero Classic inside the top-25 on the individual leaderboard, as the San Clemente, California native finished the first round in a tie for 22nd. Joseph carded a career-best even-par 72 during his first 18 holes of play at the El Macero Country Club.

LMU sits in first place on the team leaderboard at the end of the first round, as the Lions shot 6-under 282 in the tournament’s opening round. San Francisco’s Matthew Anderson takes a three-stroke lead into the second round of the El Macero Classic after shooting 8-under 64 in the first round.

The second round of the 2023 El Macero Classic gets underway Saturday, April 15. The Cougars will tee off starting at 9:05 a.m. PT. Fans can follow all the action via live results at GolfStat.com.
