Cougs have three golfers card under par during the second round of the El Macero Classic


DAVIS, Calif. – The Washington State men’s golf team had three golfers shoot under par in the second round of the El Macero Classic Saturday, April 15, to help the Cougars move up four spots on the day into 11th place on the team leaderboard.

Washington State carded 3-under 285 as a team in the second round of the El Macero Classic, as the senior Pono Yanagi and juniors Preston Bebich and Jaden Cantafio each shot under par in their second go-around the course at El Macero Country Club in Davis, California. WSU moved up four spots on the team leaderboard in the second round, as the Cougars opens Sunday’s third round in 11th place with a two-day score of 3-over 579.

Bebich paced the Cougars during the second day of the tournament, as the Gig Harbor, Washington native shot a season-best 4-under 68. The junior’s performance on Saturday helped him move up a remarkable 40 spots on the player leaderboard, as Bebich is in a tie for 30th with a two-day score of 144 (E).

Yanagi finished one stroke behind Bebich on Saturday, as the Hilo, Hawaii native ended the tournament’s second round carding 3-under 69. The senior heads into Sunday’s final round at the El Macero Classic inside the top 10 on the player leaderboard, as Yanagi sits in eighth place with a two-round score of 4-under 140 just five strokes off the lead.

Cantafio also had a big climb up the player leaderboard in Saturday’s second round. The Tustin, California native shot 2-under 70 to move up 24 spots to end his afternoon in a tie for 38th with a score of 1-over 145.

No. 46-ranked San Francisco and LMU are tied for first place on the team leaderboard after 36 holes of play at the El Macero Classic. Each team has carded 9-under 567 through two rounds of play and holds just a two-stroke lead over Cal State Fullerton heading into Sunday’s third round. USF’s Matthew Anderson holds the pole position on the player leaderboard at the end of two rounds with a score of 9-under 135. Anderson takes a one-stroke lead over Fresno State’s Matthew Sutherland and UCLA’s Omar Morales going into Sunday’s finale.

The third round of the El Macero Classic gets underway this Sunday, April 16, at the El Macero Country Club. Washington State will tee off at 8:05 a.m. PT. Fans can follow all of the action via live results at GolfStat.com.
