Maryland Returns to Mountaineer Invitational for Border Battle With West Virginia

BRIDGEPORT, W.V. — The Maryland men’s golf team returns to the links this weekend after a short nine-day break as the Stitch Intercollegiate was canceled due to inclement weather to compete in the 8th-annual Mountaineer Invitational hosted by West Virginia University. This is the Terps’ ninth event of the 2022-23 campaign.

Over the two-day tournament (Apr. 17-18), the Terrapins will play the par-72 – 7,308-yard Pete Dye Golf Club designed by the late Pete Dye.

The teams will play 36 holes on Sunday and 18 holes on Monday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on day one and 9:30 a.m. on day two.

The squad will be led by senior Dillon Brown of Halifax, Mass., senior Will Celiberti of Ridgewood, N.J., freshman Ronnie Kim of Olney, Md., freshman Constantin Mons of Hamburg, Germany, sophomore Florian Huerlimann of Heidelberg, Germany, and senior Will Koras of Lutherville, Md. will play as an individual in the invitational rounding out the Terps’ lineup.

“After getting rained out, we are looking forward to closing out the regular season at WVU,” said head coach John Phillips. “There are some strong opponents (in the field) which will test us heading into the Big Ten Championship.”

Last time out, Maryland finished sixth overall out of 12 teams back in 2021 in the fall edition of the event, which has now been permanently moved to the spring season. That year, Brown placed in a tie for 13th, Koras finished in a tie for 46th, Huerlimann in a tie for 54th, and Celiberti in solo 63rd.

The teams participating in the Invitational include host West Virginia, Coastal Carolina, Drexel, James Madison, Marshall, No. 21 Oklahoma State, St. John’s, UT Martin, No. 92 VCU, Western Carolina, William & Mary, and Xavier.
