East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s women’s golf team posted a 10-over par 298 during a rainy and windy final round and finished in second place among 14 teams at the Lady Buckeye Invitational, played on the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played on the par-72, 6,319-yard course on the Ohio State campus. Each of the 14 teams had six players competing with the lowest four scores count toward the team total.
The Spartans, who had entered the final round in second place, finished with a three-round total of 1-under par 863 (279-286-298).
Ohio State topped the 14-team field with a 10-over par 854, nine shots ahead of the Spartans, who were the runners-up at 1-under 863. Penn State placed third at even-par 864, with Maryland in fourth place (3-over par 867) and Purdue rounded out the top-five teams (7-over par 871)
Sophomore Brooke Biermann was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for sixth place at 2-under par 214 (67-74-73). Biermann closed with a 1-over par 73.
Junior Leila Raines had the second-lowest score of the day for MSU, carding a 2-over par 74 and finishing in a tie for 37th place at 8-over par 224 (76-74-74).
Three other players finished among the top-20 overall, with junior Valentina Rossi and sophomore Katie Lu tying for 16th place with scores of 2-over par 218 and freshman Paula Balanzategui tying for 20th place at 4-over par 220. Rossi posted a 4-over par 76 in Sunday’s final round to finish at 218 (71-71-76). Lu carded a 3-over par 75 in the third round to close out the tournament (73-70-75).
Sophomore Shannon Kennedy tied for 49th place at 11-over par 227 (76-71-80).
Competing as an individual, junior Nina Rissi is tied for 71st place with a two-day total of 18-over par 234 ( (80-80-74).
Michigan State starts the postseason next weekend, playing in the Big Ten Championship at Fox Chapel Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pa. from Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23.
