Women's Golf Tees Off at Pac-12 Championships

PHOENIX, Ariz. – No. 22 Arizona Women’s Golf begins its postseason competition with the 2023 Pac-12 Championships played just up the road on I-10 at Papago Golf Club, beginning on Monday, April 17. The Wildcats have a pedigree of quality golf in the conference’s championship, having finished fifth or better in every championship since 1994, which includes seven team wins during that streak. The event returns to the state of Arizona for just the second time in a decade with Arizona hosting the 2017 tournament at Sewailo Golf Club.

“Pac-12 Championships is a focal point for our entire team, and we practice and compete all year to get the chance to represent the University of Arizona in this event,” said head coach Laura Ianello. “Our young ladies have put in a ton of work and developed their games all year in preparations for postseason play, and we have had a great two weeks of practice heading into this week. I am excited to see our team go out there and play some great golf.”

The format of the Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships is similar to regular season tournaments with the lowest four scores counted out of a five-player lineup. The Wildcats will be represented by Gile Bite Starkute, Carolina Melgrati, Lilas Pinthier, Julia Misemer and Nena Wongthanavimok, which gives head coach Laura Ianello a line up of one senior, two sophomores and two freshmen.

Starkute leads the Wildcats in her senior season with the team’s lowest scoring average of 73.47. It has been a banner year for the Lithuanian who has posted top-10 finishes in half of Arizona’s 10 events this season. She matched her best individual finish of her career with a third-place showing at the Pac-12 Preview in November.

The Wildcats have tallied one runner-up finish this season, earning second place at the season-opening Mason Rudolph Championship at Vanderbilt. Arizona has a pair of other top-three finishes with one coming in the heralded Pac-12 Preview event that includes all 11 Pac-12 women’s golf programs.
