Golfers Open In 12th At BYU PING-Cougar

PROVO, Utah — The University of Colorado men’s golf team didn’t produce many high numbers but didn’t counter with many low ones here Friday as the Buffaloes find themselves in 12th place after two rounds of 58th annual Brigham Young’s PING-Cougar Classic.

No. 44 and host Brigham Young is running away with its event, as the Cougars own a 33-under par team score of 543.   BYU was so dominant Friday that all five of its designated scorers and three others playing individually all are in the top 14 on the individual standings.

Utah Valley, which actually led BYU by two strokes after Friday’s morning round, is in a distant second with a 15-under 561 score, while Wyoming holds third (9-under 567).  CSU-Northridge (568) and Hawai’i (569) round out the top five.

Colorado, ranked No. 56, got off to a slow start and never really caught fire, hovering around even-par all day; the Buffaloes were in 13th place after a 1-over 289 the first time around the 7,142-yard, par-72 Riverside Country Club course configuration, and an afternoon even-par 288 moved CU up a notch into 12th with a 1-over 577 for the 36-hole day.  The five designated scorers for the Buffaloes recorded 28 birdies and 117 pars opposite 34 bogeys and just one double.

Sophomore Dylan McDermott paced the Buffaloes on Friday, posting a 68-70—138 scorecard, the 6-under par effort tying him for ninth place.  He had a very steady day, with nine birdies, 24 pars and just three bogeys; he ended both rounds strong, with two birdies in his final six holes in the morning and four in his five seven in the afternoon.  He played the par-4 holes at 2-under, 12th-best in the 92-man field, and is also tied for eighth in birdies overall.

Sophomore Tucker Clark is tied for 51st with a 2-over 146 after back-to-back 73s Friday. He had identical rounds with three birdies, 11 pars and four bogeys for six, 22 and eight, respectively on the day to stand tied for 51st.    He parred seven of the same holes in each round while birdying No. 13 and bogeying No. 11 twice each.

Freshman Hunter Swanson matched Clark with a pair of 73’s and the 2-over 146 scorecard and almost posted similar breakdown numbers, as he had six birdies and 23 pars with six bogeys and double. The latter came on his second hole in the afternoon (the par-4 2nd), but he was 1-under the remainder of the day.

Sophomore Justin Biwer opened the day with a 3-over 75, his high score of the season, but rebounded with an even-par 72…
