He is the sixth individual Sun Devil under Thurmond in the Ryder Cup and seventh overall during his time at Arizona State, as David Puig earned selections in 2020 and 2021.
Summerhays currently sits as the No. 6 golfer in the nation on Golfstat and the third-best underclassman. He is the highest ranked Sun Devil on the list as ASU Men’s Golf sits at No. 4 nationally. On Golfweek (USA Today), Summerhays is the ninth ranked golfer in the nation and ASU is No. 2.
“If I’m going into a team event representing my country, I want Preston Summerhays on that team,” Head Coach Matt Thurmond said. “He’s a great competitor, a passionate teammate, and he will make everyone around him better. Congrats to Preston for being selected, and congrats to the USA for having someone as awesome as Preston on your team.”
Summerhays is coming off of the individual win at the Thunderbird Collegiate, the first of his ASU career. He finished the tournament at 13-under (66-68-66=200/-13) and was one of two golfers in the field to shoot below a 70 in each of the three rounds in the tournament.
He needed a mere 30-strokes on the back-nine in Sunday’s third round and was five-under on the day. He birded his last two holes and three of his last four to give ASU the victory over Arizona.
Sumerhays had three-prior top-five finishes this spring. He tied for fifth at the Cabo Collegiate and immediately followed it up with conservative ties for fourth at the N.I.T. in Tucson and the Valspar Invitational. In the fall, Summerhays was tied for sixth in stroke play of the East Lake Cup and tied for eighth at the Ben Bogan Colonial.
