Spartans Finish Second Round of the Big Ten Championships


East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team bounced back in the second round of the Big Ten Championships with a 4-over par 288 and will enter Sunday’s final round in ninth place among 14 teams.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being played at Galloway National Golf Club (par-71, 7,111-yards) in Galloway, N.J., on the outskirts of Atlantic Center.

The Spartans shot a 26-over par 310 in the first round and have a two-round score of 30-over par 598.

Second Round Results

Illinois, ranked No. 3 in the country by Golfstat, fired a 16-under par 268 on Saturday and the leads the field with a 36-hole score of 8-under par 560. Northwestern is in second place at 9-over par 577, with Wisconsin in third place (15-over par 583), Indiana

in fourth (18-over par 586) and Ohio State and Iowa are tied for fifth place (21-over par 589).

Junior August Meekhof had the best round of the day for the Spartans with a 1-under par 70, finishing the day with two birdies and 15 pars.  Meekhof is tied for 23rd place at 6-over par 148 (78-70).

Sophomore Ashton McCulloch shares team top honors with Meekhof, standing in a tie for 23rd place at 6-over par 148 (77-71).

Senior Drew Hackett shot a 2-over par 73 on Saturday and is tied for 31st place at 8-over par 150 (77-73).

Senior Bradley Smithson and fifth year Troy Taylor II both finished the day with scores of 3-over par 74 on Saturday. Smithson is tied for 41st place at 10-over par 152 (78-74), while Taylor II is tied for 46th place at 12-over par 154 (80-74).

Michigan State will play the final round of the Big Ten Championships on Sunday at 8:40 a.m., playing alongside Rutgers and Penn State.
