GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — First-year Daniel Svärd fired a 3-under 139 over 36 holes to claim medalist honors in a weather-shortened 2023 Big Ten Men’s Golf Championships at Galloway National Golf Club. Northwestern placed two in the Top-9 and three in the Top-19 to earn a runner-up result on the team leaderboard.

The Jarfalla, Sweden, native fired an even-par 71 in his Big Ten Championships debut on Friday, highlighted by an eagle on the 513-yard, Par-5 11th at Galloway National. He returned on Saturday morning and carded three birdies on the front-nine, and three more on the back, on his way to a 3-under 68 that pushed him atop the leaderboard.
After starting, pausing, and re-starting Round 3 over several hours Sunday morning, heavy rain in the early afternoon eventually forced the Big Ten to cancel the third round in progress, causing official results to revert back to Saturday’s 36-hole scorecards. Svärd is the second consecutive Northwestern golfer to win the Big Ten crown, following fellow Swede David Nyfjäll in 2022, who also joined him in the Top-10 this year with a T9 result.
