GALLOWAY, N.J. — Heavy rain that started falling at about 2:30 p.m. ET, forced the cancellation of the third and final round of the Big Ten Championships held at Galloway National Golf Club, just on the outskirts of Atlantic City.
The teams started play at 8 a.m. ET, but just 22 minutes, the players were called back in to the clubhouse after lightning hit within 10 miles of the course, with just 15 players on the course. The delay lasted until 10:45 a.m., when the teams were sent out again. The teams dodged raindrops all day, before a heavy cell that dumped an inch of rain in just under an hour made the course unplayable, and limiting the tournament to just 36 holes.
In the 50 hours from noon Friday to the cancellation time, the course saw over four inches of rain fall.
The Boilermakers finished tied for seventh as a team at 28-over par 596 (316-280), while Herman Sekne recorded his seventh top-10 finish of the season, tied for the second most in a season.
Purdue will now await word of its NCAA Regionals destination on Wednesday afternoon, when the NCAA field is announced. Purdue will be making its eighth regionals appearance in nine years.
