Bear Freshmen Start Strong At NCAA Regional

Liu, Lee In Top 25 Through 18 Holes

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – Freshman Adora Liu started strong at her first NCAA Regional Monday in Palm Beach Gardens, leading the California women’s golf team with a 1-over 73 that tied for 11th individually through one day.

The Golden Bears will head into day two at the PGA National Resort in 10th place and four strokes out of fourth with a team score of 14-over 302.

Liu (73) shot par until hole six, when she got her first of four birdies on the day. She got out to an excellent start to the back nine with birdies on holes 10 and 13. Liu has now shot 1-over or better in four straight rounds of action.

Posting Cal’s second-lowest score through 18 holes was Olivia Lee with a 3-over 75. Over the first six holes, the freshman led the Bears at -2. On hole four – the hole which gave the Bears the most trouble on the day – Lee put away her second birdie of the early going on the way to tying for 25th out of 66 golfers.

“Adora and Olivia were our anchors today,” McDaniel said. “They got off to a good start and were relaxed through the round. They just had really good plans about how to play the course for themselves and they executed.”

Rounding out Cal’s scorers, graduate student Annika Borrelli and junior Mika Jin tied for 34th after carding identical scores of 5-over 77.

“This team is really capable of putting together some good tournament rounds,” McDaniel said. “This is the time to do it and I think they all have the energy to bring it out tomorrow. It’s a marathon season. You just keep reminding the players that there’s a lot of golf left and if they can settle in, then anything can happen.”

Michigan State (-3) currently holds a big lead over the rest of the field, with second-place South Florida (+8) sitting 11 strokes behind. Duke, Texas and No. 1 seed LSU are in a three-way tie for fourth at +10, just four shots ahead of the Bears.

Cal returns to the PGA National Resort for round two on Tuesday at 8:55 a.m. ET.
