NORMAN, Okla. – The Duke men’s golf team is set to begin NCAA regional action on Monday morning, the 31st regional appearance in program history. The Blue Devils are the sixth seed in the Norman Regional and are seeking their eighth appearance in the NCAA Championship under head coach Jamie Green.
The Norman Regional is one of three regional sites to host 14 teams and five individuals, with the remaining three sites consisting of 13 teams and 10 individuals. The top five teams and low individual on a non-advancing team at each regional advance to the NCAA Championship, held on May 26-31, at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Duke’s lineup consists of Luke Sample, Ian Siebers, William Love, Kelly Chinn and Ethan Evans. Sample leads Duke with his 71.16 stroke average and is averaging -0.41 to par through 11 events this season. The sophomore has five top-five finishes, the most on the team. Love, a freshman, logged the first sub-200 54-hole score by a freshman in program history earlier this season, finishing with a 17-under 199 at the Dorado Beach Collegiate in late February.
The Norman Regional, hosted by the University of Oklahoma at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, is headlined by top-seeded Texas Tech. The host Sooners are the No. 2 seed while Alabama, Ole Miss, Wake Forest, LSU, North Florida, Colorado, Kansas, UNCW, Louisiana, Princeton and Arkansas at Pine Bluff round out the field. The course plays to a par of 72 and is 7,542 yards from the championship tees.
The Blue Devils are paired with Wake Forest and Ole Miss for the opening round, going off of hole No. 10 beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET., with live scoring available on Golfstat.
Duke has finished third or better in three of the last five regionals and in four of its last seven appearances, including a third-place finish in 2015 at the Lubbock Regional, a tied-second at the Baton Rouge Regional in 2017, a second-place finish at the Raleigh Regional in 2018 as Duke shot 22-under par – the program’s record for an NCAA Regional competition — and a second-place finish at the Athens Regional in 2019. The 2020 NCAA Championship was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
