Sophomore Jackson Rivera and freshman Mahanth Chirravuri fired a pair of 2-under 70s to firmly put themselves in the hunt for the lone NCAA Championships individual berth that is on the line at the NCAA Morgan Hill (Calif.) Regional at the Institute G.C.
The Trojan duo sit 3 back of first place in the 75-man field. The low individual on a team not advancing out of each of the six regional sites will advance to the 2023 NCAA Championships, set for May 26-31 at Grayhawk G.C. in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Rivera and Chirravuri lead the group of 10 individual entries in the field. They are four back of the top player on a team currently outside the top 5, Missouri’s Alfons Bondesson.
Rivera went out at 1-over but birdied four of his next eight holes on the back 9 before a bogey on 18. The round was his team-best 14th under par.
Chirravuri’s round mimicked Rivera’s. He went out at 1-over and also birdied 10 and 11 to get into the red. He bogeyed 13 but birdied 14 and 16 for his 2-under 70 and team-best 19th round of par or better.
Rivera and Chirravuri are paired together for the second round Tuesday and will tee off at 10:04 a.m.
