Virginia Men's Golf | James Shoots 66 as UVA Holds onto Third Place at NCAA Regional

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 16 Virginia men’s golf team remained in third place following the second round of competition at the NCAA Las Vegas Regional taking place at the Bear’s Best Las Vegas course. The Cavaliers shot 14-under 274 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 33-under 543.

Stanford overtook Arizona State at the top of the leaderboard by posting a score of 22-under 266 during the round. The Cardinal stand at 42-under 534, four shots ahead of the Sun Devils. San Francisco is one shot behind UVA in fourth place at 545 while Northwestern is in fifth place at 546 and East Tennessee State is sixth at 547.

Following Wednesday’s final round, the top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 26-31.

Virginia’s Ben James, the ACC Freshman of the Year, opened his round with three consecutive birdies on the way to shooting 6-under 66. His round featured eight birdies and two bogeys. He is tied for third place at 13-under 131. Stanford’s Ethan Ng and San Francisco’s Matthew Anderson lead the field at 14-under 130.

UVA’s other second-round scores included a 4-under 68 from Deven Patel to move him into 11th place at 9-under 135. George Duangmanee and Pietro Bovari both shot 70 on Tuesday. Duangmanee is in 44th place at 2-under 142 while Bovari is 55th at even par 144. Bryan Lee shot 78 and dropped back to 51st place at 1-under 43.

Tuesday’s play was delayed three hours mid-round due to lightning in the area.

Wednesday’s final round starts at 7:30 a.m. PT. UVA will play with Arizona State and Stanford during the third round. Those teams will begin on the first tee.
