TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Lottie Woad, who led the Seminoles to a fifth place finish at the NCAA Championship Finals earlier this week, was named as the National Freshman of the Year (co) by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association and presented by Strackaline. Woad shared the award with Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn of Iowa State.
Woad enjoyed a sensational freshman season as she won two individual championships, was named to the All-ACC team, named as the ACC Freshman of the Year, and led the Seminoles to fifth place finishes at the NCAA Raleigh Regional Championship, and the NCAA Championship Finals. Her play helped the Seminoles become one of just three teams nationally (Florida State, Stanford and Texas) to advance to match play at the NCAA Championships in both of the last two seasons.
Woad finished her freshman season with a 71.06 stoke average – the fourth-lowest in school history. Her stroke average of 71.06 is ranked as the second-lowest career average in school history. Woad totaled seven top-10 finishes in her 11 events as a sophomore.
“I’m really excited to receive this award,” said Woad. “There a lot of hard work behind it, and I could not have done it without the help of my teams at Florida State, and in England.”
Woad began her freshman season on fire with a score of 66 in her first collegiate round and a tied for fourth place finish in her first career match – the Cougar Classic. She earned four top-eight place finishes in her first four matches, including the co-championship of the Ivy Intercollegiate, and was a total of 22 strokes under par in the fall.
Woad earned her second career individual title, and led her team to the championship at the Florida State Match Up in March. She earned four top-10 finishes and was below par in three of the Seminoles’ seven events during the spring season.
“Lottie is as much a student of the game as any freshman we’ve had here at Florida State, and that’s saying a lot,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “She’s so incredibly coachable, is a great teammate, and is a selfless person. Lottie helped her teammates this year as much as her teammates helped her, both on and off the course. She has fit into the incredible culture of our program from day one.”
Woad is the second freshman in school history to be named as the National Freshman of the Year after Frida Kinhult was honored with the award in 2018.
