Sun Devils In 21st After Day One at Grayhawk


Sun Devil Men’s Golf completed the first round of the 2023 NCAA Championship in a tie for 21st at 11-over 291 (69-71-75-76). ASU was paced by Josele Ballester, who shot 1-under 69 in a tie for 14th individually.

Ballester is just the second Sun Devil to shoot under par in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in its three years at Grayhawk.

“There’s no shame in our round today,” said head coach Matt Thurmond. “We had two really good rounds by Preston and Josele. We’ll be about 10 shots off the lead and we get to go out there first thing in the morning tomorrow.”

Summerhays was 1-over 71 in his effort and tied for 31st in the field. He fired two birdies, one shy of Ballester’s team-high three.

ASU tee’s off in the second pairing at 6:32 a.m. Saturday morning in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Championships.
