Four ACC Teams Advance to NCAA Men's Golf Match Play


SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference teams will form half the eight-team field for the decisive match play portion of the NCAA Division I Championship, beginning with the quarterfinals Tuesday at Grayhawk Golf Course.

North Carolina led the stroke play competition with a four-day score of 6-under par. The Tar Heels were joined by ACC champion Georgia Tech and Florida State (tied for fifth place at 6-over par), and Virginia (11-over, placed seventh).

North Carolina will face No. 8 Arizona State in Tuesday’s quarterfinal, while No. 7 Virginia will be paired against No. 2 Florida, No. 5 Georgia Tech against No. 4 Pepperdine, and No. 6 Florida State against No. 3 Illinois.

UNC, Pepperdine and Arizona State are the only teams to advance to match play in each of the last three seasons.

Match play competition is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, with the winner crowned the 2023 NCAA team champion.

Match play gets underway at 8:20 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The Golf Channel coverage of the event begins at noon ET until 2:30 p.m., and then again from 5-9 p.m. ET. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested Tuesday. The NCAA Championship match is set for 3:35 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

Georgia Tech’s Ross Steelman placed second with a four-round 6-under par score of 274, one shot behind medalist Fred Biondi of Florida, as the stroke play individual competition concluded on Monday. North Carolina’s Dylan Menante tied for fourth place at 5-under par, and Virginia freshman Ben James was sixth at 4-under. All four ACC golfers earned All-America honors.
