There were a record number of entries this year to try to reach the national championship—10,187. From those hopeful masses, USGA local qualfiers whittled down the final number of contestants for Open spots to the 645 players who were competed over 36 holes at 10 venues on Monday in golf’s so-called “Longest Day,” in search of one of 45 invitations to play at LACC.

Nyfjäll was one of four players at Brookside Golf and Country Club who finished at eight-under 136 to play off for three spots. He, tour player Kevin Streelman and Alabama sophomore Nick Dunlap advanced when 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover missed a two-foot par putt to fall to first alternate.

There will be a significant Wildcats contingent in Southern California for the event, as Nyfjäll will be joined by fellow Northwestern alums Dylan Wu and Matt Fitzpatrick, the regining U.S. Open champion after his dramatic 2022 victory at The Country Club.

The Uppsala, Sweden, native just capped a decorated college career during which he became the Wildcats first four-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree since former world No. 1 Luke Donald.
