McMyler Wins Women’s Southern Amateur Championship

HOUSTON – Duke women’s golf incoming graduate student transfer Emma McMyler claimed the Women’s Southern Amateur Championship this week at the Golf Club of Houston in her home state of Texas.

McMyler, hailing from San Antonio, Texas, registered the win over Grace Jin in 19 holes on Thursday to cap an impressive week of golf.  In the championship match, McMyler made the turn 1UP, but Jin was able to tie the match on hole No. 14.  McMyler regained the lead, 1UP, on hole No. 15 as she rolled in a 5-footer for birdie with three holes remaining.  A par by Jin on No. 18 sent the match to extra holes.

On the first extra hole, McMyler hit her 50-degree wedge from 115 yards to 10 feet on the par-5 and converted the birdie to win the title.

McMyler earned the No. 2 overall seed in stroke-play qualifying as she fired a 6-under, 66.

In her first match in the round of 32, McMyler defeated Abby Newton, 2&1, but had to come back from an early deficit.  Newton started off with a few birdies and led 3UP through four holes.  McMyler was able to make the comeback and move on in match play.

In the round of 16, McMyler cruised with an 8&6 win over Kayla Tibbetts and then went up against Madelynn Kim in the quarterfinals.  McMyler was one down with two holes to play and then had to wait two hours for a rain delay.  She came back out and made par on No. 18 to extend the match and McMyler made par on hole No. 19 to move on.

The semifinals featured McMyler versus Calynne Rosholt.  Rosholt took the early lead 1UP through three holes, but McMyler once again battled back and drained an 18-foot birdie on No. 17 to close the match with a 2&1 victory.

The victory for McMyler was the second at the Golf Club of Houston over the past 11 months as she also won the 101st Women’s Texas Amateur in July of 2022.

McMyler is the third Blue Devil to win the Women’s Southern Amateur Championship – Beth Bauer (1998) and Sarah LeBrun Ingram (1993, 1994).
