Illinois’ Wang Helps Team USA to Arnold Palmer Cup Victory


LIGONEIR, Pa. – University of Illinois alum, and 2023 Big Ten Medalist, Crystal Wang competed for, and helped, Team USA to a 32-28 over Team International at the 27th Arnold Palmer Cup held this weekend at Laurel Valley Golf Club. Wang, a native of Diamond Bar, Calif., helped Team USA to a pair of victories and finished 2-1-1 in her matches overall.

Wang is the first women’s golfer in program history to represent the Orange and Blue at this prestigious Ryder Cup style event.

Friday – Mixed Four-ball

Wang and teammate, fellow Illinois alum Tommy Kuhl, put a point on the board for Team USA in mixed four-ball action. The two led from led from start to finish to win 2&1 over Oklahoma State’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard and Texas’ Christian Maas. The Illini duo did not card a bogey during their match, posting back-to-back birdies on No. 2 and 3 and again on No. 10 and 11. Despite the win by Wang and Kuhl, Team International took a 6.5-5.5 lead heading into the first of two rounds on Saturday.  

Saturday Morning – Foursomes

Wang and her teammate, Texas A&M alum Jennie Park shared a point with Team International and Florida State’s Charlotte Heath and Lottie Woad during Saturday morning’s foursome matches. The duo took the lead at No. 2 and would go 3-up at the turn, but the Seminole pairing won three of the next four holes to bring the match all square after 13. Team International would take the lead after 16, but Wang and Park parred No. 17 to bring the match level, with neither side able to earn a match-clinching point on No. 18. Team USA would win the morning session 7.5-4.5 to take a narrow 14-11 advantage heading into afternoon play.

Saturday Afternoon – Mixed Foursomes

Wang was again paired up with Kuhl for the second round of mixed foursomes matches, where the duo was part of a dominant afternoon for Team USA. The pair got off to a blistering start to their match against Purdue’s Herman Sekne and Woad, playing mistake-free golf to take a commanding 5-up advantage after eight holes. They continued their dominant play on the front, eventually winning 3&2 for their second win of the event. Team USA nearly swept the Saturday afternoon session, winning 10.5-1.5 to take a 24.5-12.5 lead heading into Sunday’s final round.
