LOS ANGELES – UCLA men’s golf sophomore Omar Morales will be the first player in the field to tee off for the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club on Thursday morning at 6:45 a.m. (PT).
The major championship event will be televised during the afternoon on USA TV Network and during the evening on NBC. Morales is one of 18 amateur golfers in the field of 156. The only other Bruin competing this weekend is Patrick Cantlay (2010-12) who posted his best U.S. Open finish last year at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., where he tied for 14th.

Morales is paired with South Africa’s Deon Germishuys and Auburn graduate Jacob Solomon. The Puebla, Mexico, native wrapped up his first practice round yesterday with World No. 1-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler. The Los Angeles Country Club will play a par 70 with a course yardage of 7,423.
Morales qualified for the U.S. Open back on June 5 when he won his qualifying round at Hillcrest Country Club with a score of 12-under over two rounds (65-65).

In his collegiate season, Morales won his first individual medal at the El Macero Classic with a score of 13-under (69-67-67). He led UCLA with a 72.2 scoring average over 21 rounds and seven events.
This year’s U.S. Open marks the first time the event has been held in the City of Angels since 1948. Ben Hogan won his first of four U.S. Open Trophies that year.
Corey Pavin (1977-80; 1981-82) is the only Bruin to win a major championship, coming at the 1995 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.
