Three takeaways from first round of the 2023 Meijer LPGA Classic

Cheyenne Knight sends her ball to the hole during the first round of the Meijer LPGA Classic Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, MI.

Cheyenne Knight and Lindsey Weaver-Wright were the clubhouse leaders from the morning groups at 6-under 66s.

Weaver-Wright had six birdies and eagled the eighth hole which helped offset her two bogeys.

“From the very first hole, everyone was making birdies. We pushed each other and made birdies all day,” Weaver-Wright said. “I was able to make a long one (30 feet) for eagle. I hit a lot of greens and made the opportunities I did have.”

The weather saw light drizzle for about an hour during the early tee times, then it warmed up before the swirling winds quickly cooled things back down at the end of the day.

“You can make a lot of birdies on this course if you can position yourself of the tee. I played pretty solid and didn’t make a ton of mistakes, and when I did, I was able to recover. It was nice to throw in some birdies. This golf course, close to 20 under usually wins, so it was a good start,” Knight said. “It is the firmest this course has played. We played in the cold and rain for a few holes. As the week goes on, it is supposed to get a lot dryer and making sure the lines off the tee are better.”
