NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s golf student-athlete Gordon Sargent has been selected to represent the United States at the 49th Walker Cup Match it was announced on Thursday.
Sargent—who received an automatic invitation to the squad as the top-rated player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings—will be representing his country for a second time this summer after going 3-0-1 to help the U.S. to a victory at the Arnold Palmer Cup two weeks ago. The Walker Cup will be played at the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, Sept. 2-3 and include 18 singles and eight foursomes matches.
He becomes just the third Commodore to be invited to compete at the event, joining John Augenstein (2019) and Hunter Stewart (2015). The rising junior also has competed on the international level at the World Amateur Team Championship last year, where he helped the USA win a bronze medal in Paris, France.
Sargent, who hails from Birmingham, Alabama, most recently was the low amateur at the U.S. Open after posting a 284 four-round total at the Los Angeles Country Club, and he was also one of seven amateurs invited to compete at the Masters Tournament.
A first-team All-America selection by both the Golf Coaches Association of America and Golfweek, he was named the national Player of the Year by the latter publication as well. Sargent earned GCAA first-team all-region honors while also being voted the SEC Player of the Year and first-team all-conference this spring, and he was a finalist for the Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Haskins Awards as well.
