Steph Curry drains dramatic putt to win America Century Championship

STATELINE, Nevada — Steph Curry dug into his bag of tricks and pulled out a dramatic win, this time on the golf course.

Curry sank a long putt on hole No. 18 to make an eagle and score 6 points to pass Mardy Fish for the win.

After 17 holes Sunday, Fish had 72 points and Curry had 69 in the 34th American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe.

A huge crowd gathered along the fairway on No. 18, and then closed around the golfers as they approached the green. The crowd erupted when Curry’s putt fell in.

Curry scored 75 points and Fish finished with 73 points. Curry led after the first two rounds and went into Sunday’s final round with 50 points, while Fish had 47 points in the Modified Stableford scoring system.

Joe Pavelski finished third with 66 points, three-time champion Mark Mulder was fourth with 59 and Aaron Rodgers finished fifth with 56.

Curry is the first active athlete to win the ACC since the NFL’s Al Del Greco in 2000.

Rodgers, now the New York Jets quarterback, had his best finish at Edgewood. He had four birdies on the back nine Sunday.

“I’m excited to finish in the top five and be the top active football player,” Rodgers said. “There’s some really good players on the board. And I’m not one of them. Watch me on the range, you’d be surprised I’m scoring this much. But I am pretty crafty, and I got a few shots in the bag. And I’m damn competitive.

“I love this event. I love coming back here. And proud of Steph the way he’s playing. Steph and Mardy are good friends of mine.”

More notable scores

Charles Barkley was 81st with minus-33 points. Defending champion Tony Romo finished in eighth place with 51 points. Annika Sorenstam was sixth with 55 points.

Scoring

The ACC uses the Modified Stableford format. Unlike stroke play, players are awarded points based on how they perform on a hole, with the goal being to score as many points as possible.

Here’s a look at how points are awarded:

  • 10 points: Double eagle
  • 8 points: Hole-in-one
  • 6 points: Eagle
  • 3 points: Birdie
  • 1 point: Par
  • 0 points: Bogey
  • minus-2 points: double bogey or worse

What is the purse?

The event features a $600,000 purse, with $125,000 going to the winner and $60,000 going to the runner-up. The celebrity golf event also raises money for local and national charities.

Next year the next ACC tournament will be held July 12-14, 2024.
