Andrews Named Finalist for Jan Strickland Outstanding Assistant Coach Award

Tennessee men’s golf assistant coach Bo Andrews has been named a finalist for the 2023 Jan Strickland Outstanding Assistant Coach Award presented by TaylorMade, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Thursday.

The award is presented to the NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach that has excelled in working with their student-athletes both on the course and in the classroom. Andrews is one of five finalists for the award.

“Bo has been an invaluable asset since his arrival on Rocky Top,” head men’s golf coach Brennan Webb said. “His passion for coaching and connecting with our players, coupled with his relentless energy in recruiting have made a huge difference for our program.”

“With him being named a finalist for the Jan Strickland Award it’s obvious that his impact has been noticed by his peers as well.”

In his fifth season as assistant coach in 2022-23, Andrews helped guide the Vols to a program-record-tying three team titles, and six top-two team finishes–which stood as the second-most in a single season in program history.

During the 2022-23 season, Tennessee boasted a program-best 281.45 scoring average that included 27 team rounds of par or better.

Additionally, Andrews helped oversee UT posting its best score in SEC Championship history—a 14-under 826—to claim a first-place finish in stroke play and advance to the match play semifinals.

Individually, Caleb Surratt became fifth Vol in history and first since 2005 to win the individual SEC Championship after firing a 14-under 196. The true freshman’s performance was the second-best 54-hole score and the lowest ever by any freshman in SEC Championship history.

Andrews also played a part in two Tennessee golfers earning postseason honors—Surratt was named SEC Freshman of the Year and first-team All-SEC, while redshirt junior Bryce Lewis was a second-team All-SEC selection. On top of their conference honors, the duo gained PING All-Region honors from the GCAA.

Along with his SEC and All-Region honors, Surratt was named PING First Team All-America selection—making him the first Vol in history to secure First Team honors.
