Men’s Golf Hires Oliver Whatley as Assistant Coach

PISCATAWAY, N.J- The Rutgers men’s golf program hired Oliver Whately as the team’s new assistant coach. Whatley joins head coach Rob Shutte on the staff this month and will assist with all aspects of the Scarlet Knight team that was named the top golf program in the Northeast for the 2022-23 season.

Whatley has served as a volunteer assistant since the spring and looks forward to fill the role of the program’s former assistant Ryan Rose.

“It’s a great privilege to be able to fill the shoes of Ryan Rose,” Whatley said. “I have tremendous experience being a player on the team for four seasons. I fell in love with the state of New Jersey and what Rutgers has to offer. I have been able to reflect in my two years away and I am super excited to give back everything I have learned to our current program and Rutgers University.”

“It felt like a no-brainer considering Oliver’s experience as a player in our program and his work as a volunteer assistant this spring,” Shutte said. “The players are super excited to have his knowledge, experience, and energy coming back to the program. Oliver is extremely passionate about Rutgers and how much of a special place this is. Anytime you can bring players back to your program just like Coach Rose who loves this place, just makes our program stronger.”

Whatley was a four-year member of the Scarlet Knights golf team and graduated from the program and university in 2021. The three-time Big Ten Conference Championships starter was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, a 2021 PING All-Region selection, and a 2020 Srixon/Cleveland All-America Scholar.

The three-time Preseason Big Ten Player to Watch (2019-21) finished his collegiate career with 34 tournament appearances and 99 rounds of play. The 2017 Janney Invitational Champion holds the school record for most birdies in a season with 97.
