Vanderbilt Men's Golf | Three Dores On Preseason Watch List

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A trio of Vanderbilt men’s golf student-athletes are beginning the upcoming 2023-24 season among the top 25 in the PGA TOUR U Class of 2024 rankings. William Moll leads the Commodores on the list, entering the campaign third, with Matthew Riedel standing eighth and Cole Sherwood at No. 21.

The individual atop the rankings at the end of the season will automatically earn a PGA Tour card.

Moll’s 70.5 stroke average last season was second on the team, as he shot under par in 17 of 32 rounds while recording five top-10 results highlighted by a win at the season-opening Frederica Cup. Riedel competed in all 13 tournaments for Vandy a year ago, posting a 70.9 scoring average and 18 rounds under par including earning medalist honors at the SEC Fall Preview among his six top-10 finishes. Sherwood broke par on 19 occasions last season, placing in the top 10 four times while recording a 71.0 stroke average.

Four Dores Make Cut at Southern Amateur
Moll led Vandy’s contingent at the 117th Southern Amateur Championship last week, tying for seventh in the individual standings with a 6-under par 210 three-day total. It was his second straight top-10 finish this summer after he accomplished the feat at the Trans-Mississippi Amateur the previous week. Wells Williams carded a 4-under-par 212 score at the Southern Am—which was held at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee—to place among the top 25, with Riedel tying for 28th place one shot behind the rising sophomore and Jackson Van Paris also advancing after breaking par in each of the first two rounds of the tournament.

Western Amateur on Tap
Vanderbilt will have five members of the program competing at the 121st Western Amateur this week, with the group including Moll, Riedel, Cole Sherwood, Van Paris and Williams. The world’s third oldest amateur championship—behind only the British Amateur (1885) and the U.S. Amateur (1895)—the event attracts top-ranked players from around the world and will be contested at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Illinois. A field of 156 individuals will compete in 72 holes of stroke play over the first three days of the tournament, with the top 16 advancing to match play.
