Women’s Golf | August 06, 2023
LOS ANGELES – Senior Brianna Navarrosa, junior Amari Mitchell, freshman Bailey Shoemaker and recent graduate Malia Nam (Class of 2023) tee off Monday (Aug. 7) in the 2023 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles.
The 156-women field will play 36 holes of stroke play Aug. 7-8, with the top 64 finishers advancing to a six-round match play format to decide the champion. Golf Channel will broadcast live coverage of the match play portion Aug. 9-13.
USC hopes to continue to add to its trophy case, as the Women of Troy have hoisted four USGA trophies in the event, including Gabriela Ruffels (2019), Jennifer Song (2009), Becky Lucidi (2002) and Jill McGill (1993). Additionally, two Trojans have earned medalist honors after 36 holes, Heidi Vorhees (1993) and current redshirt sophomore Trojan Jiarui (Joyce) Jin (2019).
Three Trojans earned exempted status from the qualifying events: Avery, Navarrosa, and Shoemaker. Avery made her way onto this year’s field by virtue of being a team member of Team USA during the 2022 Curtis Cup, completing 72-holes at the U.S. Women’s Open and being among the top 25 points leaders in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking. Avery made it to the round of 16 in 2022 before falling to eventual teammate Shoemaker.
Navarrosa qualified for being a quarterfinalist in the 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur, and Shoemaker earned her spot with a semifinal appearance and after playing 72-holes at the U.S. Women’s Open.
Nam will compete in the field after placing fourth at a qualifying event with a 73 on June 26 at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Women of Troy’s three-current athletes ties them for the second most current athletes for an institution, tied with eight other schools, behind the University of Minnesota (4).
USC sixth-year head coach Justin Silverstein will be on the bag for Avery, as associate head coach Tiffany Joh will join Navarrosa for the tournament.
