Virginia Athletics | Sambach Advances to Match Play at U.S. Amateur

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Virginia women’s golfer Amanda Sambach used an impressive second-round performance to tie for 18th in stroke play and advance to Wednesday’s match play portion at the 123rd annual U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Los Angeles.

After shooting 4-over 74 during Monday’s opening round, Sambach shot 4-under 66 on Tuesday at Bel-Air Country Club. Her second-round score tied as the fourth best among the 156 competitors. Her round featured seven birdies and three bogeys. She played her opening nine holes bogey free and made the turn at 4-under 32.

Sambach will face Anna Davis in the round of 64 of match play. Their match is scheduled to start at 4:30 ET from the first tee. As a 16-year-old, Davis on the 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

Coverage of Wednesday’s round of 64 of match play will be televised by Golf Channel from 6-9 p.m. ET.

This year’s U.S. Amateur Championship is Sambach’s third appearance at the event. Last year she was 17th in stroke play and advanced to the round of 32 of match play. In 2020 she qualified for the tournament but did not advance out of stroke play.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur, the third oldest of the USGA championships, was first played in 1895 at Meadowbrook Club in Hempstead, N.Y. The event is open to any female amateur who has a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 5.4. The Women’s Amateur is one of 14 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

The winner of the tournament receives:

A gold medal and custody of the Robert Cox Trophy for one year
Exemption from qualifying for the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open
Exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Women’s Amateurs, if eligible
Exemption from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Girls’ Juniors, if eligible
Exemption from qualifying for the next 15 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateurs, or 15 years from the time the player becomes eligible
Exemption from qualifying for the next 15 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateurs, or 15 years from the time the player becomes eligible
Invitation to the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur
Likely exemptions into the Chevron Championship, AIG Women’s British Open and Amundi Evian Championship
