MEMPHIS — An epic finish during the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis should be the expectation now. For the third consecutive year, the winner was decided in a playoff.
Lucas Glover pulled out the win on Sunday over Patrick Cantlay to secure his second win in as many weeks.
There was plenty of shuffling in the FedEx Cup standings as a result of Sunday’s finish.
Two more tournaments will take place in August as part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. After 70 golfers participated at TPC Southwind, the field will be cut to the top 50 for next week’s BMW Championship.
Glover entered this weekend right on the bubble, sitting at No. 49. He is now No. 4.
Here are some of the most notable moves after the FedEx St. Jude Championship in the playoff standings.
Biggest winners
Glover is the biggest winner. Cantlay didn’t win, but his performance boosted him from 13th to No. 5 in the projected standings.
Cam Davis and Hideki Matsuyama were the two golfers who can take the deepest sighs of relief. Each golfer was sitting outside of the top 50 before doing just enough to put themselves in the projected top 50. Davis is projected to rise from 62nd to 45th after finishing tied for sixth. Matsuyama rose 10 spots to 47th in the projected standings.
Biggest losers
Right behind Glover in the standings at No. 50 entering the weekend was Nick Hardy. He finished tied for 49th at TPC Southwind, and the projected standings have him on the outside looking in at No. 52.
Jason Day, Kurt Kitayama and Sam Burns were in no danger of missing the cut for the top 50 of next week’s tournament, but only the top 30 will advance to the Tour Championship the following week in Atlanta.
Day dropped from 11 to No. 21 in the projected standings after finishing tied for 52nd at 2 under. Kitayama’s fall came after a final round 74 and he finished for tied 52nd after entering Sunday with a chance to break into the top 10. His projected ranking went from 23rd to 33rd. Burns had a similar fall, dropping 11 spots from 19th to 30th in the standings after also finishing tied for 52nd.
Sitting comfortably
Some of the biggest names who didn’t have their best performances include Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Tony Finau. Rahm finished tied for 37th, but he’s still projected to remain atop the FedEx Cup standings. Scheffler, who finished tied for 31st, will also remain in his No. 2 spot.
