Cal Senior Advances To Match Play

CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. – After pacing the field with a 6-under-par 66 on Monday, California men’s golfer Sampson Zheng clinched a share of medalist honors at the 123rd U.S. Amateur Championship as stroke play concluded on Tuesday at Cherry Hills Country Club.

Zheng joined 16-year-old Blades Brown and Jackson Buchanan as co-medalists at 7-under-par 136 through 36 holes of stroke play. He finished Tuesday’s round with a 1-under 70 to advance to the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur as the third seed.

Zheng’s 66 on Monday was a bogey-free round with three birdies on each side of the course. Despite a pair of bogeys on holes 4 and 13 on Tuesday, Zheng overcame them with three additional birdies on 7, 11 and 16.

Zheng was one of five Cal-affiliated players in the U.S. Amateur stroke-play field, along with redshirt junior Tony Chen (+1), fellow senior Aaron Du (+12) – Zheng’s U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship-winning partner in May – and alumni Michael Jensen (+2) and Stephen Hale (+7).

Zheng will face Arizona State’s Preston Summerhays in the round of 64 at noon PT on Wednesday. Two rounds of match play will be played Thursday, with the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the 36-hole final on Sunday. NBCUniversal will have coverage of all five days of match play, starting on Wednesday at 2 p.m. PT on Peacock and 3-5 p.m. PT on Golf Channel.
