Fords, Greaser Win U.S. Amateur Matches

Maxwell Ford, David Ford and Austin Greaser won their respective matches on Wednesday to send the trio of University of North Carolina men’s golfers to the round of 32 in the 2023 United States Amateur at Cherry Hills Golf Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.

Caleb Surratt, a first-team All-America from Tennessee, ended Dylan Menante’s tournament with a 6&5 victory.

Maxwell Ford tied for fourth in the 312-player field in stroke play and continued his strong play with a 4&3 win over Texas’s Brian Stark. Stark won the first two holes, but Ford evened the match after five and won four consecutive holes to take a 3-up lead after the 12th hole. The junior from Peachtree Corners, Ga., won the 14th hole to go 4 up and closed out the match with a par on the 15th.

David Ford, Maxwell’s twin brother, won the first three holes and five of the first six against Pepperdine’s William Walsh en route to a 6&5 victory. Walsh’s only win came on the 10th, but Ford bounced back by winning the 11th and 13th holes to end the match. Ford, the 2023 ACC Player of the Year who has already earned an automatic bid to play for Team USA in the Walker Cup in early September, won seven holes, including five with birdies.

Greaser, a fifth-year senior from Vandalia, Ohio, won eight holes and lost only two in a 6&4 win over Oklahoma State’s Jonas Baumgartner. It was Greaser’s sixth win in his last seven U.S. Amateur matches dating back to 2021, when he finished second. Greaser won three of the first six holes today. Baumgartner won the ninth to pull within two, but Greaser ended the match by winning the 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th holes.

Surratt made four birdies and an eagle in his win over Menante, who was a semifinalist a year ago.

In Thursday’s round of 32, Maxwell Ford plays North Florida’s Nick Gabrelcik, David Ford plays Grant Smith of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Greaser plays LSU’s Connor Gaunt.

Thursday mornings winners will play again in the afternoon in the round of 16.
