Silvies Valley Ranch: A unique golf resort

Scott Campbell likes to take the road less traveled. A veterinarian turned resort developer, he has built one of the nation’s most unusual golf resorts — and it is in the middle of nowhere.

Campbell’s gem, The Retreat at Silvies Valley Ranch, is also in Oregon. But while Bandon Dunes sits on the coast, recalling storied Scottish links, Silvies Valley is in the center of the state, 300 miles from the nearest ocean.

The resort features two reversible 18-hole championship courses, two 18-hole putting courses, a seven-hole ridge course and a mountain meadow nine-hole, par-3 course.

“We pride ourselves on delivering an all-encompassing experience to our guests that goes well beyond the traditional golf resort,” Campbell said. “Yes, we have our five golf courses, but we also offer more than 15 other activities for our visitors to enjoy. I think offering a wide range of options that includes activities such as our Rocking Heart Spa and fishing is what has driven our popularity.”

Silvies Valley Ranch had been a working ranch since 1883 when Campbell bought the 140,000-acre site in 2007. He put together what he called a multiyear recovery plan, which included building the resort, modernizing the ranch facilities, adding miles of new fences, and investing in wildlife and fish habitat restoration.

The resort has lodging, multiple dining options, a spa and even a private airstrip so guests can fly directly to the property. It offers a way for guests to enjoy the ranch lifestyle while still being pampered with modern comforts.
