SAMMAMISH, Wash. – A career-best finish of third place by sophomore Filip Jakubcik at 1-under par propelled Arizona Men’s Golf to fourth place at the prestigious Sahalee Players Championship on Sunday. The Wildcats posted a final score of 12-over as a team to cap the event in the top third of the 12-team field. Jakubcik also collected his second consecutive top-10 finish after earning a tie for sixth at the Folds of Honor Collegiate earlier in the week.
“To have a strong performance at an elite event after a quick turnaround is something we can really hang our hats on,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “This week was a good test for our guys, and I liked how they responded to the challenge. To see Filip earn the best finish of his career this weekend says a lot about his development after the opening week of his sophomore season. Tiger, Johnny and Yannick also played some good golf with top-25 finishes at Sahalee, which shows you the quality of golf played throughout our lineup. This will be a good springboard for the Fighting Illini Invite next weekend after another short week.”
Tiger Christensen earned a top-10 finish for the weekend for the fourth time in 10 tournaments as a Wildcat after carding rounds of 72, 74 and 72 at Sahalee Country Club. Teammate Yannick Malik, who finished in a tie for 21st at 5-over par, recorded the first top-25 finish of his career in just his fifth career appearance.
The Wildcats will return to action for its third tournament of the season later this week. Arizona will make its third consecutive trip to the Fighting Illini Invite at Olympia Fields Country Club, which will begin on Friday, Sept. 15.
