East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s golf team shot a 15-over par 295 in the first round of the Fighting Illini Invite, being held on Olympia Fields North in Olympia Fields, Ill., just outside of Chicago.
The Spartans are in 15th place among 15 teams in a field featuring 15 teams that played in the NCAA Regionals last year and 11 of those that advanced to play in the NCAA Championships.
Texas shot a 4-under par 276 and leads the field, with Georgia Tech second at 3-under par 277. North Carolina in in third place (3-over par 281), Florida State is fourth (3-over par 283) and Arizona State, Illinois and Alabama are tied for fifth place (5-over par 285).
Senior August Meekhof and junior Ashton McCulloch are tied for 42nd place with scores of 3-over par 73. Meekhof finished his round with four birdies and nine pars. McCulloch played his back nine, holes 1 thru 9, in 1-under par and finished the day with two birdies and 12 pars.
Senior Bradley Smithson is tied for 57th place at 4-over par 74 and freshman Lorenzo Pinili was one shot back at 5-over par 75 and is tied for 66th place.
Junior Satchel Pierce is tied for 71st place at 6-over par 76.
The Spartans tee off at 10 a.m. (ET) on the 10th hole on Saturday, playing alongside Stanford and Oklahoma State.
