Washington’s Husky Invitational Up Next for Utah Golf

THIS WEEK

The Utes are about to hit the links for their second tournament of the young season, traveling to Bremerton, Wash., the site of the 2023 Husky Invitational, which will be held on Sept. 18-19. This 54-hole, three round invitational takes place at Gold Mountain Golf Course, which spans over 7,000 yards and will encompass 54 holes across three rounds.

 

This will be the second straight season Utah participated in this tournament after they placed eight out of 15 teams a year ago. The Utes played their best golf in the compeition’s first round, posting a 4-over 292 that put them in second place before finished the event at 23-over. Javier Barcos and Braxton Watts put up Utah’s best scores, with Barcos shooting even par in the first round and tying for 20th while Watts closed out the first round 1-under while earning a share of 24th.

 

This is the fifth time in the last decade that the Utes will battle for the Husky Invitational title, with the team’s 2022 performance representing their high finish over that span in this event. Among the programs also returning to Bremerton are the Washington State Cougars, who will be attempting to defend the title they captured at the 2022 Husky Invitational.

 

THE FIELD

Many familiar foes will partake in the tournament along with the Utes including, Washington, California, Colorado State, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Seattle University, San Diego State, San Jose State, St. Mary’s, UCLA, and WSU.

 

UTAH’S LINE-UP

The Utes will send out five golfers to take on the field and their lineup will consist of Brandon Robison, Braxton Watts, Javier Barcos, Peter Jung and Gabriel Palacios. Their will also be three Utah golfers competing as individuals: Tanner Telford, Sergio Jimenez and Davis Johnson.

 

COACHES THOUGHTS: Head Coach Garrett Clegg

“I’m looking forward to getting this tournament going!” said Clegg. “It will be good to get a couple of new players in the line-up and see what they can do! I’m also excited for the three playing as individuals, Tanner, Davis, and Sergio.
