Cougars Finish Eighth at Leadership and Golf Invitational

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Graduate student Danielle Suh shot a final-round 69 to lead Washington State on the final day of play at the 2023 Leadership and Golf Invitational Tuesday, hosted by Seattle U and played at the par-72, 6,093-yard Chambers Bay Golf Course.

Suh’s final round helped Washington State move up one spot to finish the three-round event in eighth place at 890 (+26). Southern California won the team title at -27, well ahead of Minnesota (+4), Georgia Southern (+10) and Oregon State (+10).

“We saw glimpses of great stuff from everyone this event,” said WSU Head Coach Sofie Aagaard. “Good ball striking, creating many opportunities for under-par scoring with both birdies and eagles. Our short game was steady around the large and undulated greens. We will for sure work on putting, both short and long putts to lower the total scores for everyone. Our green reading wasn’t great this week either as we were challenged by the undulations and different grass on the surface than we are mostly used too.

“It was a good start to the season for Madelyn with a t-10 individual finish,” Aagaard continued. “She hung in there all three rounds after slow starts each day. A three-under par-round for our transfer addition Dani today was great to see as she rolled in great putts and found her rhythm on the course and with this new team.”

Tuesday’s final round by Suh included five birdies as she moved up 21 spots to finish tied for 20th with a two-day total of +3, 219. Senior Madelyn Gamble led WSU over the two days as she ended her three rounds at even-par, 216. Gamble fired a 1-over, 73, Tuesday as she finished the event tied for 10th overall.

Freshman Alice Johansson had five birdies on her final round before finishing with a 1-over, 73. Johansson finished her first event as a Cougar with a three-round score of +8, 224, tied for 38th. Sophomore Hannah Harrison finished her tournament tied for 71st with a +15, 231, after shooting +8, 80, Tuesday.

Junior Sarah Skovgaard-Bils shot a final round score of +9, 81, giving her a three-round total of +21, 237 to finish 89th.

WSU has two student-athletes competing as individuals. Freshman Sara Pineros shot a 12-over 8 Tuesday, giving her a three-round total of 234, tied for 79th overall. Junior Emily Cadwell ended her tournament with a final round 85, finishing with a two-day total…
